SDP- 24; the 12th Session focused on “student matters” and was conducted by Dr. Rajitha Silva, Senior Student Counsellor of University of Colombo.
Aim is to provide valuable training and insights to staff members who work closely with students, such as teachers, academic advisors, counselors, student mentors etc.
Understanding Student Needs: The session can help staff members gain a deeper understanding of the diverse needs and challenges faced by students, including academic, personal, and socio-economic factors.
Effective Communication Skills: Staff members can learn effective communication strategies for engaging with students, including active listening, empathy, and clear and concise messaging.
Cultural Competency and Inclusivity: Training on cultural competency and inclusivity can help staff members create welcoming and inclusive environments for students from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging and community on campus.
Mental Health Awareness: Given the increasing prevalence of mental health issues among students, staff development sessions can provide training on recognizing signs of distress, offering support, and referring students to appropriate resources.
Student Success Strategies: Staff members can learn about evidence-based practices for promoting student success, such as academic advising best practices, study skills workshops, time management techniques, and goal-setting strategies.
Supporting Underrepresented Students: focus on supporting underrepresented and marginalized student populations, including first-generation college students, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and international students.
Professional Boundaries and Ethics: Staff members can receive training on maintaining professional boundaries, ethical conduct, and confidentiality when working with students, ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
