Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Achievement

The Faculty of Management & Finance (FMF), University of Colombo, has a long-standing tradition of recognizing and celebrating outstanding student achievement.

At the General Convocation of the University of Colombo, exceptional students of the Faculty are honoured through a distinguished range of Prizes and Gold Medals. These awards recognize excellence in academic performance, specialized fields of study, research, professional competencies, leadership and broader contributions to university life.

The awards also reflect the strong partnerships that the Faculty has developed with leading organizations, professional bodies, alumni and distinguished individuals who share FMF's commitment to academic excellence and the development of future leaders.

The next General Convocation of the Faculty of Management & Finance will be held in 2028. The 2028 Convocation will also mark the introduction of a number of new Faculty-wide Gold Medals, further strengthening the Faculty's tradition of recognizing excellence.

The following Prizes and Gold Medals recognize outstanding achievement in specific academic disciplines, subjects and areas of specialization within the Faculty.

Faculty-wide Recognition

1. J. A. S. K. Jayakody Memorial Gold Medal

For the Most Outstanding Student of the Faculty

The Prof. J. A. S. K. Jayakody Memorial Gold Medal is one of the principal awards of the Faculty. It recognizes the most outstanding student of FMF based on the criteria determined by the Faculty.

The award celebrates exceptional achievement and represents the Faculty’s highest tradition of recognizing outstanding student performance

2. MBA Graduate Award III

For the Best Overall Performance in the BBA Degree Programme

This award recognizes outstanding overall performance in the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Programme.

3. Commercial Bank Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in the BBA in Accounting Degree Programme

The Commercial Bank Gold Medal recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the BBA in Accounting Degree Programme.

 

4. ACCA Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Financial Accounting

The ACCA Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in Financial Accounting in the BBA Degree Programme.

5. Sri Lanka Association for Securities and Investment Analysts Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Financial Management

This Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in Financial Management and celebrates excellence in the application of financial knowledge and analytical skills.

 

6. CFA Society Sri Lanka Gold Medal

For the Best Performing Student in the BBA in Finance Honours Degree Programme

The CFA Society Sri Lanka Gold Medal recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the BBA in Finance Honours Degree Programme

7. Aitken Spence Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Management Accounting

The Aitken Spence Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in Management Accounting.

8. Link Natural – Dr. Devapriya Nugawela Gold Medal

This Gold Medal recognizes outstanding overall performance in the BBA in Human Resources Management.

9. Suntel Gold Medal

For the Most Outstanding HRM Graduate of the Year

The Suntel Gold Medal recognizes an outstanding graduate of Human Resource Management based on academic achievement and broader accomplishments.

The award recognizes the importance of developing well-rounded graduates whose achievements extend beyond the classroom to areas such as leadership, sports, aesthetic and cultural activities, community engagement and other extracurricular pursuits.

10. CIM Sri Lanka Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in the BBA in Marketing Degree Programme

This Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in the BBA in Marketing Degree Programme.

 

11. NOLIMIT Gold Medal

For the Most Outstanding Performance in Global Marketing

The NOLIMIT Gold Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in Global Marketing.

 

12. Thimali Dharmasiri Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Marketing Management

This Gold Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in Marketing Management.

Management and Organization Studies

13. CLC Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Management Process and Practice

The CLC Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in Management Process and Practice.

Business Economics

14. Mastercard Gold Medal

For Outstanding Performance in Business Economics

The Mastercard Gold Medal recognizes outstanding performance in the relevant area of Business Economics.

New Faculty-wide Gold Medals

Effective from the 2028 General Convocation

The Faculty of Management & Finance is further strengthening its tradition of recognizing excellence by introducing a new group of Faculty-wide Gold Medals, effective from the 2028 General Convocation.

Unlike awards associated with a particular specialization or department, these Gold Medals recognize outstanding achievement in areas of academic importance across the Faculty.

15. Teejay Lanka PLC Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Dissertation in the BBA Programme

The Teejay Lanka PLC Gold Medal recognizes the student who demonstrates the best performance in the BBA Dissertation.

The award celebrates excellence in independent research, critical thinking, analysis and the application of academic knowledge to contemporary management and business issues.

16. CIMA – Inspire Business School Gold Medal

For the Best Performance in Strategic Management

The CIMA – Inspire Business School Gold Medal recognizes the student with the best performance in Strategic Management.

The award celebrates excellence in strategic thinking, business analysis and the ability to understand and respond to complex organizational and competitive environments.

17. FMF Alumni “Back to Faculty” Gold Medal

For the Most Outstanding Performance in Microeconomics

The FMF Alumni “Back to Faculty” Gold Medal recognizes the student with the most outstanding performance in Microeconomics.

The award reflects the continuing commitment of FMF alumni to giving back to the Faculty and supporting the academic development of future generations of students.

18. Professor W. M. Jayaratne Gold Medal

For the Most Outstanding Performance in Organizational Behaviour

The Professor W. M. Jayaratne Gold Medal recognizes the student with the most outstanding performance in Organizational Behaviour.

The award has been established in honour of Professor W. M. Jayaratne, a distinguished academic associated with the development of management education in Sri Lanka and the Faculty of Management & Finance.

The Gold Medal celebrates excellence in understanding human behaviour in organizations and the application of behavioural knowledge to contemporary management.

19. University of Colombo Award for Academic Excellence

Recognizing the Best Student in Each Academic Department

The University of Colombo Award for Academic Excellence recognizes the best-performing student in each of the eight academic departments of the Faculty of Management & Finance.

The eight academic departments of FMF are:

  1. Department of Accounting
  2. Department of Business Economics
  3. Department of Finance
  4. Department of Human Resources Management
  5. Department of International Business
  6. Department of Management and Organization Studies
  7. Department of Marketing
  8. Department of Hospitality & Leisure Management

Through these awards, academic excellence is recognized across the diverse fields of management education represented within the Faculty.

20. University of Colombo Open Awards

In addition to Faculty-specific Prizes and Gold Medals, students of the Faculty of Management & Finance are eligible for a number of University of Colombo Open Awards.

These awards are open to eligible students across the University and recognize achievement that extends beyond a particular Faculty or academic specialization.

I. University of Colombo Student of the Year

The University of Colombo Student of the Year award recognizes exceptional overall achievement and contribution extending beyond academic performance.

II. Canekeratne Prize for General Merit

The Canekeratne Prize for General Merit recognizes outstanding general merit and achievement at the University level.

III. Professor Tilak Hettiarachchy Award for Academic Excellence

The Professor Tilak Hettiarachchy Award for Academic Excellence recognizes outstanding academic achievement at the University level.

IV. D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize

The D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize recognizes achievement associated with the values of peace and harmony and is among the University-level awards for which FMF students may be considered.

A Tradition of Excellence

The Prizes and Gold Medals of the Faculty of Management & Finance represent much more than recognition at the end of a student’s academic journey.

They reflect a culture that encourages students to pursue knowledge, excellence, innovation, leadership and service.

They also represent a valuable partnership between the Faculty and the wider community. The generosity of industry partners, professional organizations, alumni and distinguished individuals has enabled FMF to recognize achievement across an increasingly diverse range of academic and professional areas.

The introduction of new Faculty-wide Gold Medals from the 2028 General Convocation marks another step in this continuing journey.

The 2028 General Convocation will provide the next opportunity to celebrate the achievements of FMF graduates and to present the Prizes and Gold Medals to deserving recipients.

Following the Convocation, this page will be updated with the names of the recipients, their degree programmes and the respective awards.
